<p>The bridge was designed by the engineering firm Mott, Hay and Anderson and built by Dorman Long and Co. of Middlesbrough. The Bridge was officially opened on October 10 1928 by His Majesty King George V.</p>

<p>Anyone who doubts this need only look at the Gateshead River Side. The Sage Gateshead, the Gateshead Millenium Bridge and the Baltic Art gallery all within a stones throw of each other.</p>
